About Pocinho
The village of Pocinho is located on the left bank of the Douro River. Belonging to the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, it saw the birth of writer and journalist Francisco José Viegas, who lived there for the first few years of his life.
The train arrived in Pocinho in the 19th century and on board it brought the impetus for the growth of the region, since, at the time, the station constituted an important warehouse for goods, minerals and agricultural products. This is where, since 1988, the Douro Line has ended, when the section that reached Barca D’Alva and Spain was closed.
The dam and water sports
Opened in 1983, the Pocinho dam is the second most recent in the Portuguese Douro and the last, with a lock, in national territory. Going up or down the river, cruises that connect Régua to Pocinho or Barca D’Alva pass through the dam.
The free use of the reservoir attracts water sports lovers who can enjoy the tranquility of the Douro there. In fact, it is here, right on the banks of the Douro, that the Pocinho High Performance Rowing Center is located.
20 thousand years of history 15 minutes from Pocinho
11 kilometers from Pocinho is the Côa Valley Archaeological Park. The banks of the Côa River, a tributary of the Douro, are known for their cave paintings – pieces of the History of our territory that Man engraved in stone more than 20 thousand years ago.
The visits are full of culture and, for the more daring, there is the possibility of a night walk through the Côa engravings.
