Pinhão

About Pinhão

Between the peaceful riverbed of the Douro and the river Pinhão, its tributary, lies one of the pearls of the Douro Wine Region: Pinhão – a small village of immeasurable beauty. With origins in the 19th century, the town is located right in the center of the Douro Demarcated Region and it is here that many of the Port Wine producing farms operate. An aerial view over Pinhão lifts the lid on the region. Carefully designed terraces and meticulously aligned vineyards create unique patterns that turn the landscape into a true masterpiece. On land, there is much to discover and a flood of stories and customs to unravel.

The most beautiful train station in Douro

History and development were generous to Pinhão, as this was the first parish in Vila Real to have a telephone, permanent post office and running water. However, it was the arrival of the train, in 1880, that contributed to the expansion of what, until now, was nothing more than a small town. However, anyone who thinks that the station is just one of many across Portugal is mistaken. Those who visit it claim that it is the most beautiful in the Douro, thanks to the 24 tile panels that characterize it so well. The more than 3 thousand tiles refer to the harvest, the crushing of grapes and the transport of wine, in rabelo boats, to Vila Nova de Gaia. A viewpoint for the Douro Wine Region Above Pinhão is Casal de Loivos. From this village you can see the peaceful curves of the Douro, the green banks, the terraces and the village of Pinhão. The breathtaking view was considered one of the most beautiful in the world by BBC London. Pinhão is the dominant element of the landscape, but it is not the only one that makes it one of the most beautiful and unique in the Douro. Among the greens and browns, small towns and farms here and there mark the region. From the viewpoint it is also possible to see the mouth of the Pinhão River, which seems to magnify the region's extension even further.
